Rob Beck’s 1991 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am: Built to Tear Up the Autocross
If you’ve spent any time at UMI Motorsport Park, you’ve probably seen Rob Beck and his 1991 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am tearing up the course. This car isn’t just a classic—it’s a serious track machine that Rob has been fine-tuning for years to keep it competitive at Muscle on the Mountain, Autocross Challenge, and King of the Mountain events.
What’s Under the Hood?
Rob’s Firebird packs a tuned port 350 engine with a G-Force 5-speed transmission. It’s got the muscle and the manual control to handle those tight turns and quick shifts that autocross demands.
Suspension Upgrades That Make a Difference
Rob isn’t messing around when it comes to suspension. He swapped in non-adjustable lower control arms with polyurethane bushings, grease fittings, and zinc-plated steel sleeves. That means better durability and performance without all the fuss of constant adjustments.
To keep everything solid under pressure, he added an adjustable tunnel-mounted torque arm to stop flexing and cracking in its tracks. Plus, a beefier transmission mount helps keep things steady when he’s pushing the limits.

Keeping the Frame Tight
One thing you notice about Rob’s car is how stiff and balanced it feels on the course. That’s thanks to a strut tower brace that spreads out cornering forces across the frame, and subframe connectors that minimize chassis flex. Those upgrades make the car respond more predictably when things get sideways.
Handling Like a Pro
To keep body roll and understeer in check, Rob installed a rear sway bar. It tightens up the rear end so the car stays planted through corners, giving him more confidence—and faster times.
Quick Shifts Every Time
Rob also went with a short shifter handle on his transmission. This simple upgrade cuts down on shift throw distance, letting him snag gears faster and smoother when it counts.
