UMI’s 1987 Custom Deluxe is one of our favorite in-house projects. It looks cool, rides great, is reliable and we spend a lot of time just enjoying it. The stock drivetrain is reliable but the upgrades take it way past the average squarebody restoration. This is a truck you can hop in an go cross country at a moments notice.

We spent the summer building and driving the UMI ’87 C10. The guys have been using it as a shop truck, in addition to many of us borrowing it every weekend. We take it on short rides, long rides, twisty rides and highway rides. With a stock drivetrain the gold square is almost unbearably slow but is super reliable and easy to drive. Hit the key and you can literally drive across the country (which is what we plan to do when Hot Rod Power Tour starts again in 2021).

We took the ’87 to its first Carlisle Truck Nationals in 2020. We had a great time and introduced everyone to the gold squarebody. It was well received and we even made some new friends interested in #umitrucks.

One of the best things about having a nice, reliable truck is the adventures you can enjoy. UMI President Ryan Kirkwood spent a day cruising and ended up in the Pennsylvania Wilds.
